let the Rayne pour

so, yesterday was my girl's birthday. it wasn't just any old birthday, but her 30th. YAY!!!
for months, weeks, days; leading up to it, she complained and whined that she was "getting old" and "oh, my God, I can't believe i'm gonna be 30". I openly laughed and teased her about it because 30 really isn't old at all. In fact, she could never pass for being her age as she looks like she's still in her early 20's. (READ...12 when she wears a ponytail...lol) So, unless she publically announces her age, who'll be the wiser?

age my friends, is NOTHING BUT A NUMBER! it's not a reflection of yourself nor is it a death sentence. the older you get, the wiser you get. with age comes said wisdom (unless you're just dumber than duck shit...she's far from that!) i digress. anyhoo, she's a smart and talented young woman who works hard, loves her family & real friends, will do just about anything for anyone, and need not worry about being 30.

today's 30, is the new 20 they say...personally, i think it's a little insulting given the way most 20 y/o act, but that's just my opinion. being 30 affords you a certain right and privilege because people will actually take you more seriously, be more inclined to show you the courtesy you deserve regardless, and the doors of opportunity will fly open in your favor. see, i've noticed that everyone spouts off about experience this; experience that and you, for the most part don't really have it until you're in your 30's. a certain maturation has occurred by this time so one should embrace that new milestone with the vitality and drive it deserves.

Rayne, this post is to shout you out for being a great friend. Welcome to the real world. Look forward to all the blessings this new avenue of your life will afford you. Don't worry about the number as it's not who you are, you are who you are. Your ambition and your willingness to be open and receptive will be the catalysts for your success. The woman you are forming into is ready to shine. Excuse my redundancy, but 30 is a beautiful and wonderful time and experience. It's a marker for your development and with open arms, heart, and eyes, you'll see that this chapter of your life will blaze the trail for you.

So true about age being a number. Turning 30 was relatively easy for me. 40 was the hard one. You are one of a small handful of people who know the numerical age difference between Ali and I, but that was an obstacle that existed in my head. I felt like a living cliché when we first committed to each other. I was a middle-aged man driving a classic sports car (300ZX) that was older than my girlfriend. Ouch! It was horrible, but it was all in my head and Ali helped me deal with it. But the timing between us is perfect. I entered her life when she needed my experience and quite honestly, I wasn’t ready for her until I met her at age 39. Today I’m the happiest man alive and I look forward to many great years with Ali.

Peace and Love,

Ali's Zay

Back in the day, I used to dread turning the dreadful "40" because I'd heard so many bad stories about women/men losing their minds and sitting at home with the four mangy cats and eating soup with a fork all day long when they turned 40. Now that I'm fast approaching it myself, guess what I found out...

Baby, 40 is fabulous!

I don't feel a bit psychotic, I still don't like cats and I wouldn't dare eat soup with a fork. And you know what?

Age aint nothing but a number!

Hey - Thanks for this. It means a lot. And as usual, I have to admit that you were right. I feel great. I feel inspired. I feel excited. I feel like I have a new beginning. I went through a lot in my twenties and now that I'm all grown up. It's time to do it right.

It won't be hard with friends like you in my corner. Luv U Alwayz!!

I had this posted on my blog in January.

An article regarding Oprah's upcoming 50th in the October 2003 magazine online.

"I wouldn't take nothin' for my journey now," says an old spiritual. Nothin' for the big lesson I learned time and again in my 20s: Give up your power to no one, especially a man who's shown he cares only about himself. Nothin' for the 30s, which taught me: Own yourself in every way possible, so you never have to sell yourself short or be bought by anyone. Nothin' for the 40s, where I've come to know that becoming more of yourself is the only route to authentic, lasting
power.

My friend Maya Angelou, who turned 75 this year, told me, "The 50s are all you were meant to be.” I marvel at that because, though I've accomplished a lot, I believe the best is yet to come.

Happy Birthday Rayne!

I'm over 40 and look to the years ahead with confidence and plans for personal accomplishment.

I would never trade the wisdom I've gained for youth. Never!

If you have a moment, I need your vote for Top Momma. Check it out! Yes, I have to ask and you'll see the shameless plea posted on Thursday.

Thanks again for visiting and commenting this week. Friday's post is "Harvest."

30 was hard for me, because I hadn't achieved all the goals I set for myself by that age. Thankfully, I got over it and by the time 40 rolled around last year I had a renewed spirit and reserved myself to the 3F's. Forty, Fine and Fabulous. My sister called me an old woman when I turned 30. This year I get to ask her do you feel old now that you are 30? You gotta love it!

I'm gonna be 27 in July and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet, I'll be honest.

But I agree that 30 is not the new 20. Do you know how much of a jackass I was at 20? Who the hell wants to be 20? You have very little sense of self at that age and decision making is hit or miss...

or was that just me?

Tell your girl to come see me. I just turned 29 yesterday and I can't wait until 30. She should embrace it and be thankful that she made it that far.

I am not sure if I believe that 30 is the new 20, but I am definitely much happier with my life as I approach 30.

I loooooove being 30. I'm actually soon to turn 31, officially putting me in my "30s" (cuz let's face it, when you're 30, you're still brand new to it). But, I wouldn't have it any other way. People still think I'm in my early 20s also. This cute little high-school thing at the register at Kohls tried to holler the other day. I was so flattered. LOL!

Thank you all for the birthday wishes and encouragement. I agree, 30 is definitely not the new 20. I sat and thought about how I was at 20. Let's just say, had it not been for friends like Blu steppin in at the right time, I wouldn't have been able to embrace 25 let alone 30. My 30s are off to a good start. I celebrated with close friends and family and I received nice wishes from you all! Thank you much. Stay Blessed!
